PubMed abstracts relevant to each gene are identified. Curated abstracts are collected from Gene and OMIM, then an additional search of PubMed is carried out using alternative symbols and specific words from the gene description.

eg. for CTLA4: either CTLA4, CD152 OR CTLA-4 are used as a symbol
AND cytotoxic OR lymphocyte are used as specific words from the description.

The words "protein" and "associated" are excluded from the search since they are too generic.

If too many results are returned the search is restricted using MeSH headings.

Each abstract is screened using the list of keywords.

The number of abstracts identified and the hitscore is shown on the list of genes
